Lorenzo DeStefano
Lorenzo DeStefano is an American playwright, screenwriter, novelist, producer, director, and photographer.[1][2][3][4][5][6] He has been a member of the Directors Guild of America since 1993 and a past member of the Motion Picture Editor’s Guild.[1][2][7][5] He has worked in U.S. and U.K. Theater, has written fiction and non-fiction, original screenplays, and adaptations, and produced and directed network series, documentaries, and narrative films.[8][9][1][2][3][7]
Early Life and Education
Lorenzo DeStefano was born in Honolulu, Hawaii.[10] While still in high school, he began working as a location scout for local commercial production companies and apprenticed to several independent filmmakers based in Hawaii.[10][4] At the same time, he was exploring his creative process as a teenage street photographer in Honolulu,[3][4][5] chronicling the diverse, multicultural island life where he grew up.
His early black-and-white thematic work included Rest Homes Hawai’i and Leahi Hospital – Children’s Ward.[4] DeStefano’s other photography credits include his traveling exhibition, Cubanos-Island Portraits - 1993-1998, which has been shown extensively in Cuba and New York, Chicago, London, Havana, Los Angeles, and Vancouver.[5] These Cuba photographs are in the Permanent Collection of MOLAA - Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, and the Permanent Collection of the University of Miami’s Cuba Heritage Collection.[3][4][11] His photographs have also been licensed for print, CDs, TV, and film, including HBO’s Six Feet Under and the Warner Brothers film Queen of the Damned.[10][11]
In 1973, DeStefano moved from Honolulu to Carmel, California, where he expanded his visual explorations to making short films and learning more about filmmaking. During this time, he was accepted into the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara but decided to change from still photography to filmmaking, focusing on a career in film editing.[10]
Career
DeStefano moved from Carmel to Los Angeles in 1978, where he worked at the post-production facilities of National Geographic Films in Hollywood.[6] His first onscreen credit was as an Assistant Editor on the 1978 National Geographic Special, Hong Kong - A Family Portrait, directed by Robert M. Young. In 1979, DeStefano was accepted into the Motion Picture Editor’s Guild.
DeStefano’s motion picture film editing career includes The Blue Lagoon, Making Love, That Championship Season, Dreamscape, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Thrashin, Winners Take All, The Killing Time, and Gingerale Afternoon.[6] He was Supervising Film Editor, Producer, and Director during the 4-season/83-episode run of the acclaimed, Emmy-winning ABC/Warner Brothers drama series Life Goes On.
DeStefano’s film, television, and theater work has been widely reviewed on many platforms, including the NY Times,[12] the LA Times,[12] Variety,[12] Sight & Sound,[12] The Guardian, The Independent – London, The Observer – London, the Hollywood Reporter, Chicago Sun-Times, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Harvard Gazette,[12] Vancouver Sun, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the Hallmark Channel, KTLA, WBGO-Newark, WBUR-Boston, KCRW-FM-Santa Monica, NPR’s Fresh Air, and Weekend Edition, and many more.
DeStefano’s Screenplays include Shipment Day,[1] based on his play, The Diarist, based on The Inman Diary published by Harvard University Press, Cropper’s Cabin, from the novel by Jim Thompson, Appointment in Samarra (co-writer) from the novel by John O’Hara, Waiting for Nothing, from the novel by Tom Kromer, Creeps, from the play by David E. Freeman, and the original scripts Lads and Deep Inside.[10][13]
His feature documentaries as Producer and Director include Talmage Farlow, a portrait of the American jazz guitarist, Los Zafiros-Music From The Edge Of Time, about the Beatles of 1960s Cuba, and Hearing is Believing, about the gifted young musician and composer Rachel Flowers.
DeStefano’s theater directing includes William Inge’s Natural Affection, Horton Foote’s The One-Armed Man, the world premiere of Robert Schenkkan’s Conversations with the Spanish Lady, the world premiere of Twisted Twain by Bill Erwin, Jitters by David French, productions of Providence and Shipment Day.
His plays include House Boy, Shipment Day, Stairway To The Stars, Providence, and Camera Obscura.[10][1][13]
- House Boy was inspired by true events and set in South India and North London, based on his 2022 novel.
- Shipment Day was first developed as a One-Act in 2015 at the Road Theatre Company in Los Angeles and won Best Play at the 2016 PlayBuilders of Hawai’i New Works Festival. The full-length version had its World Premiere in Nov/Dec 2018 at the Hawai’i Performing Arts Company/Manoa Valley Theatre in Honolulu and won Broadway World’s Best Play in Hawai’i in 2019. It will have its European premiere in 2023 at the JA International Theatre in Lisbon.
- Camera Obscura, from the 17 million words “Inman Diary,” was developed in 2001 at Seattle Repertory Theatre, with a world premiere in 2002 at London’s Almeida Theatre starring Peter Eyre and Diana Hardcastle, both productions helmed by the celebrated English director Jonathan Miller.
- Providence, based on the screenplay by the late British dramatist David Mercer, has had staged readings produced in Los Angeles (Antaeus Theatre Company/Matrix Theatre), New York (Second Stage), and London (Greenwich Theatre).
- Stairway to the Stars, a One-Act play, was produced in 2019 at PlayBuilders of Hawai’i.
DeStefano founded the Ventura Film Society in 2008, a cinema activist organization dedicated to bringing people together in the dark.[12]
His debut novel, House Boy, was published on June 7, 2022,[14][15] by Atmosphere Press,[16][17][18] a book about the persistent caste discrimination and human slavery in India,[19][20][21][22][17][15] that gained recognition and received positive reviews from the readers.[23][24] The novel won the 2023 Featured Quill Reviewers Choice Book Award[16] and the 2022 American Book Fest Fiction Award in the Multicultural Fiction category. It was also the Finalist in the 2022 American Writing Awards in the Thriller/Adventure Fiction category and a Notable Indie in the 2022 Shelf Unbound Writing Competition.
His 2023 Narrative Short Film, Stairway To The Stars, starring Sean Young and Quinton Aaron,[25][26][27] is currently in film festival release.
