Synopsis

"Do Everything in Love" explores the complexities of love in a rapidly evolving world where notions of gender and identity are expanding. It doesn't seek to provide definitive answers to these issues but encourages readers to reflect on their connections with others and with God. This book complements my previous meditative work from 10 years ago, titled 'The Author of Love: Understanding a Misunderstood God.'

In a time when gender fluidity and diverse identities are emerging, the book emphasizes that the most important aspect is to follow the two new commandments given by Jesus: to love God and love your neighbor (John 13:34-35). It acknowledges that loving your neighbor perfectly is impossible for humans, but suggests focusing on loving God, recognizing that God is the author of love.

This book promotes a deeper spiritual connection with God to foster greater love and understanding for neighbors, acknowledging the evolving nature of love in today's world.

Development

James Antonio Anderson, also known as Joc, was born in the Philippines in 1949 to a Filipina mother and a father of Filipino and Swedish descent with Virginia roots, hence the name Anderson. Arriving in the USA in 1954 at the age of 4 years old, Anderson developed a strong connection to his extended family, using familial terms like cousins, aunties, uncles, lolo, and lolas, despite no blood relations.

Though initially given the nickname "Jr." due to sharing his father's name, he adopted "Joc" as a self-identifier, reflecting his athleticism and love for sports. Anderson, often considered the "jock" of his family, had a diverse range of interests, including spirituality, religion, introspective of people, music, dance, and entertainment.

Raised in the Seventh Day Adventist church, Anderson grappled with the church's conservative stance on homosexuality, viewing it as a choice and an impediment to divine acceptance. Despite attempts to conform, the internal struggle proved unbearable. Ultimately, he embraced his identity as a gay individual, challenging traditional religious perspectives. Anderson's journey led him to believe in a loving and inclusive God, countering divisive interpretations of scripture.

In response to contemporary societal challenges marked by hatred and division, Anderson felt compelled to share his journey in a book. Recognizing the decline in organized religion's membership and the rise of atheism/agnosticism, he aimed to highlight a more accepting and compassionate understanding of spirituality. Anderson emphasized the importance of embracing diverse lifestyles, cultures, and identities, asserting that God's love is unconditional for all.

His writings underscored the personal nature of one's relationship with God, advocating against judgment and urging love for others. Anderson hoped his books would introduce readers to the God he personally embraced—one characterized by love and inclusivity.
