Joseph Steinberg

Joseph Steinberg (born February 26, 1980) is an American cybersecurity expert. He serves as a cybersecurity witness and advisor, author, columnist, and speaker. He has more than two decades of experience within the cybersecurity industry and is known for offering insights and unique perspectives on cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the potential impact of technological developments on human society, advising businesses and the U.S. government on such matters. He is the inventor of several information-technology security technologies used today, and his work has been cited in over 500 published U.S. patent filings.

Steinberg is the founder of Joseph Steinberg CyberSecurity Expert Witness and Advisory Services, LLC. He previously founded SecureMySocial and Green Armor Solutions.

Steinberg serves on the advisory boards of several organizations.

Early life and education

Steinberg developed an interest in computers and technology at the age of 8 years old when his parents signed him up for a summer computer class.

He is a graduate of New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and served as the founding President of the NYU Alumni in Tech group. He is one of only 28 people worldwide to hold advanced information security certifications, CISSP, ISSAP, ISSMP, and CSSLP.

Career

Steinberg stepped into the information security industry in the mid-1990s and currently serves as an expert witness and advisor.

Steinberg also currently serves as a Senior Policy Analyst at the Global Foundation for Cyber Studies and Research think tank, as a cybersecurity expert member of Newsweek’s Expert Forum, and as an advisor to the WonderKey Collective nonprofit that provides technology and related resources to underserved and underfunded communities across the United States.

Steinberg is a member of the Cybersecurity Council of CompTIA, the world’s largest technology trade association and its second-largest related certifying body. He has chaired the Financial Advisory Board for a New Jersey municipality that, at the time, had combined municipal and education budgets of approximately $150 million.

Earlier in his career, Steinberg co-founded and served as the CEO of the cybersecurity firms, SecureMySocial and Green Armor Solutions, and worked in several senior capacities at Whale Communications, which was acquired by Microsoft. SecureMySocial launched the world’s first system to protect businesses and their employees by warning people in real time for making inappropriate social media posts.

He has presented his work at conferences, including the Next-Generation Threat Protection Summit in 2012, the Massachusetts Network Communications Council Conference in 2007, the BAI Multi-Factor Authentication Forum in 2006, the Wall Street Technology Association Conference on Security, Business Continuity Planning & Technology Risk Management in 2004, the e-Financial World Expo in 2004, and the New York Information Systems Security Association conferences in 2001 and 200., He has been an outspoken critic of the sexism often prevalent in technology companies, particularly among startups.

In November 2021, Steinberg joined the advisory board of Sepio Systems.

In June 2021, he was appointed as a Senior Policy Analyst at the Global Foundation for cyber studies and research.

In June 2018, Steinberg joined the advisory board of the Automotive eXchange Platform (AXP).

In August 2016, he was appointed to the advisory board of Simplilearn.
