Anneloes Smitsman (born June 3, 1974) is a Dutch futurist, systems scientist,[1] award-winning pioneer in human development and systems change,[2][3] public speaker, entrepreneur, and award-winning bestselling author[4]. She is the founder and CEO of EARTHwise Centre, a non-profit company providing education, leadership, governance, research, publishing, and systems design for planetary thrivability.[5]

Through her research and pioneering work, Anneloes Smitsman has contributed significantly in the fields of leadership, education, human and organizational development, governance, systems science, systemic transformation, sustainability, and regenerative economics.[2][3][6][7]

Early Life and Education

Smitsman was born in Wijchen, the Netherlands, to A.W. Smitsman, a retired associate professor in ecological psychology from the Radboud University in Nijmegen, and C. Smitsman-Cornet, a former quality care manager of the Radboud Hospital in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Smitsman began learning to play piano at 8 and initially explored becoming a concert pianist, but later had to shift her career focus due to a chronic wrist injury.

At 16, she was elected as a member of the provincial European Youth Parliament (EYP) of Gelderland, the Netherlands. Several months later, she was elected as a national delegate for the EYP of the Netherlands, after which she was elected as an international delegate for the Dutch delegation of the EYP at the European level. She continued as a member of the international EYP organizing committee from 1990-1993 and organized the EYP Conference in Budapest in 1993.[8]

Smitsman completed her Bachelor's degree in Law from Nijmegen University in 1994 and her Master's degree in Law and Judicial Political Science (JPW) from Leiden University, the Netherlands, in 1997. During the last year of her law studies at Leiden University, she embarked on an exchange program with Pretoria University from 1996-1997 to write her Master's thesis Tension within Democracy – a democratic challenge, South Africa as a case study.[2]

In 1998, Smitsman was awarded two special scholarships by the Australian National University for conducting her Ph.D. research at the Graduate Program of Politics and International Relations at the Department of Political Sciences, the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. Her Ph.D. research focussed on institutional design for the future based on indigenous cosmologies of time and governance models for planetary stewardship. During this period, she co-authored the widely cited journal article “Placing Welfare States: The Netherlands as a Crucial Test Case” with her former Ph.D. supervisor Prof. Dr. Robert E. Goodin, published in the Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis Research and Practice, April 2000.[9] In 2000, she decided not to complete her Ph.D. at the ANU and embarked on her personal journey of transformation, planetary healing, and indigenous wisdom.

In 2014, Smitsman started her Ph.D. research as an external researcher at the Maastricht Sustainability Institute (formerly ICIS), where she obtained her degree of Doctor in December 2019 from the School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University the Netherlands.[10] Her Ph.D. Dissertation Into the Heart of Systems Change[11] is being implemented worldwide for systemic transformation in economics, education, politics, and governance through her proposed Transition Plan for a Thrivable Civilization.[12]

Career

Leadership and Entrepreneurship for Systemic Transformation

As a systems scientist, Smitsman has been researching the root causes of the sustainability crisis for over two decades.[1] In particular, how to solve this by applying the evolutionary principles and capacities of living systems for human and societal development within planetary boundaries.[11][13] As an entrepreneur and business leader she applies this research to develop innovative business solutions for accelerating the transition to regenerative post-carbon societies.[7][14][15] As a global leader for systemic transformation, she draws from her unique and diverse interests in science, digital technology, social innovation, indigenous wisdom, systems design, and human development.[7][16]

In 2014, Smitsman founded EARTHwise Centre,[5] a non-profit CSR registered company based in Mauritius and operating worldwide as an educational training, research, and leadership center for developing systemic capacities for planetary thrivability, based on the wisdom of living systems. Smitsman currently serves as the CEO.

The EARTHwise initiatives[17] focus on designing, developing, and applying evolutionary systems, cultures, and capacities for a regenerative and thrivable world. In particular, how to solve for the massive misalignments and coordination failures of mainstream mechanistic systems that are at the root of the sustainability crisis, and which have caused catastrophic biodiversity loss, run-away climate change, and social-economic divisions. To address this, Smitsman and her team co-founded the EARTHwise DAO at the beginning of 2023 to expand the positive impact of EARTHwise, in collaboration with their partner Hypha who develops and deploys DAOs as a service.[18] A DAO is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization designed to utilize collective intelligence through new types of collaborative structures, tools, and tokens based on blockchain technologies.

The EARTHwise DAO is designed as a collaborative platform for building and deploying the EARTHwise game for civilizational transformation, which Smitsman is currently co-creating with her teams and partners. The game is designed as an open-world immersive action game with real-world challenges, mind-shifting quests, and social communities for collaboratively taking on the greatest challenges of our time.[19] The game is developed and deployed through web3-based platforms with ethical AI integrations, regenerative tokens, and transformative blockchain technologies. Through game simulations, players become aware of the root causes of the sustainability crisis and how to co-create a thriving planetary civilization. Empowering the millions of people who want to make a difference with the tools, incentives, and transformative solutions for doing so.[19]

Constitutional Design and Movement Building for a Planetary Civilization.

In 2022, Smitsman developed and launched the EARTHwise Constitution for a Planetary Civilization, based on the wisdom of complex living systems.[20][21][22] The constitution serves as a new kind of social contract and compass for societal transformation, which includes a framework of five Future Archetypes that formed part of her doctoral research and features in her books.[2][23] The constitution also serves as the governance compass for the EARTHwise Centre and DAO, and the architecture of the EARTHwise game.

The EARTHwise Constitution is receiving international acclaim as a guiding framework for co-creating sustainable and prosperous worlds and futures based on key evolutionary principles. Numerous organizations worldwide have endorsed it and are adopting it for their unique purposes. Smitsman has also supported Hypha and SEEDS to develop their DAO Constitutions based on the living systems principles that are outlined in the EARTHwise Constitution. She has done so as part of her role as systems architect and steward for the Hypha and SEEDS DAOs since 2019.[18][23] The EARTHwise Partnership Alliance is growing rapidly and serves to build the movement for a planetary civilization by collaborating on the basis of the principles, vision, and values the constitution offers.[24]

Educational Transformation and Social Innovation

During her 8 years in Australia from 1998 to 2006, Smitsman worked as a life coach and developed educational programs for schools and businesses to develop their ecological literacy, sustainability competencies, and wisdom-based leadership.

In 2006, Smitsman moved with her former husband to Mauritius and became a mother of their two sons. She designed what became the first solar-passive eco house in Mauritius. She started to train communities and schools in their ecological literacy development as part of her former company ELIA-Ecological Living In Action,[25] until she resigned in 2015 after their divorce. She was the Project Initiator of One Future One Planet (OFOP) Mauritius in 2013-2014, an international project for building sustainable communities, locally and globally.[25]

In 2007, Smitsman became actively involved in the cultural heritage protection of the oral history and local legends of the descendants of the slaves and maroons in Mauritius. Her work with local stakeholders and UNESCO consultants led to Le Morne Mountain becoming an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.[26] She continued to carry out this stewarding role until mid-2016 to ensure that the slave heritage trails as per the Le Morne Management plan were opened, as promised.

In 2012-2013, Smitsman developed the multi-stakeholder dialogue process for the Global Dialogues, which was adopted in 2012-2014 in 9 different countries for the UN Rio+20 civil society inputs.[27][28] Through this work, she trained the SIDS (Small Island Developing States) Youth Leaders under UNESCO for the 2014 UN SIDS Youth inputs for the UN SDG formulations.

In June 2016, Smitsman gave a TEDx talk in Mauritius about how love can provide a solution for our world in crisis by becoming a "Vector of Love".[29] Following her TEDx talk, mid-2016, Smitsman was contacted by Robin Gurung from the United States, who grew up in a Bhutanese refugee camp. Gurung told Smitsman about the shadow side of the Bhutanese refugee crisis from the early 1990s and explained how he, together with other Bhutanese refugees, had been living in exile while seeking avenues for reconciliation and the opportunity to return home to family members who had to stay behind. Smitsman agreed to mediate in the conflict resolution, offering the invitation to the Bhutanese government for a multi-stakeholder dialogue for healing, truth, and reconciliation based on her Vector of Love methodology. This became known as the Bhutan Dialogue. From 2016-2018, Smitsman collected 17 letters from high-level organizations in support of such a dialogue and sent this via registered mail to His Majesty Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and His Majesty Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Kings of Bhutan, as well His Majesty Willem-Alexander, the King of the Netherlands, and Prime Minister Right Honorable Tshering Tobgay of the Kingdom of Bhutan.[30] The matter remains unresolved today due to the lack of acknowledgment and response to receiving these letters from Bhutanese officials.

From 2011-2018, Smitsman developed and led the EARTHwise Education for Sustainability program for schools in Mauritius, which served as national input for curriculum innovation in Mauritius.[31][32] This program reached over 20,000 students, through which hundreds of teachers were trained by Smitsman. Based on her work in education, she was contracted as the lead author for developing the r3.0 Educational Transformation Blueprint from 2020-2021, which includes 7 Learning Perspectives for regeneration and thriving with key recommendations for the transformations of mainstream education.[2][33]
