Optimus Prime is a fictional character in the Transformers series. He is leader of the Autobots in the Transformers: Prime story and turns into a semi-truck.

Transformers: Prime

Optimus Prime is the leader of the main group of Autobots in the 2010 computer animated series Transformers: Prime.[1]

In this series, Optimus is a veteran military commander and second in command who wields an ion blaster and a double bladed energon axe. He became the leader of the Autobots after Zeta Prime fell in battle, but is not certain he wants the responsibility. The war with the Decepticons was going badly, and it looked like there was no end in sight. He vowed to himself and to the warriors under his command that he would never surrender, never retreat, and never stop fighting until the Decepticons were defeated.

In the Transformers: Prime series he can form bladed weapons or blasters from his hands. He has telescopic vision and turns into a long-nose semi-trailer truck. After being reformatted in the episode "Rebellion" Optimus was even larger and more powerful than before, now able to fly and sporting enhanced weapons. He has used the Star Saber and the Forge of Solus Prime several times in the past.

Fictional biography

Beast Hunter Voyager: It took long years of patient training, battlefield experience, and constant modifications for OPTIMUS PRIME to achieve the raw might with which he combats MEGATRON and the DECEPTICONS. Now, he is the perfect warrior and a courageous leader, against whom evil can never stand.

Animated series

Optimus Prime in Transformers: Prime

In the war for Cybertron eons ago, Optimus was once Orion Pax, a historical archivist in the Iacon library. Throughout his studies on Cybertron's past, Orion became aware of the social inequality among Cybertron's populace. He became inspired by a gladiator taking the name of one of the thirteen original Primes, Megatronus. Megatronus attempted to start a revolution to overthrow Cybertron's current leadership and take the mantle of Prime. However, Orion preached a different ideology, declaring that violence is not the means to achieve justice, and thus, Megatronus changed his name to Megatron and severed ties with Orion, starting the Great War that destroyed Cybertron. Orion soon ventured into the core of Cybertron and was bestowed with the Matrix of Leadership by Primus, becoming Optimus Prime. After Cybertron became barren and lifeless, he and Megatron took their war to Earth, after which Megatron disappeared for three years. With Ratchet, Arcee, Bumblebee, Bulkhead, and Cliffjumper under his command, the Autobots were granted asylum on Earth by the US government if they kept the Decepticons at bay. However, in "Darkness Rising", the Decepticons return, killing Cliffjumper and target Jack, Raf, and Miko, three children who were seen with Arcee and Bumblebee. Optimus requested they be brought to base and know the full story, much to Arcee and Ratchet's dismay. Megatron returned soon after, wielding dark energon and nearly killing Optimus and Ratchet with a horde of reanimated Cybertronian corpses. Optimus later fought Megatron on the latter's space bridge, which Megatron intended to use to bring forth an army of undead to conquer Earth. Though Optimus is nearly killed by Megatron, he is able to gain the upper hand, and leaves Megatron to his apparent destruction when the Autobots destroy the space bridge. However, Optimus later confided in Ratchet that he still mourns Megatron's death, as he had a small glimmer of hope he could be turned to good. However, he does not underestimate Megatron's successor, Starscream.

In "Scrapheap", Optimus and Arcee journey to the Arctic on a reconnaissance mission, but due to an infestation of Scraplets at the base, they are prevented from returning. Optimus and Arcee are nearly frozen to death by the hostile Arctic conditions, but, thanks to Jack, Raf, and Miko, they are saved.

In "Sick Mind", Optimus is infected with the life-threatening Cybonic plague, prompting Arcee and Bumblebee to infiltrate the Nemesis to find a cure for the virus Megatron himself created. As Optimus grows weaker, he learns of Megatron's survival of the space bridge explosion. It was Bumblebee entering Megatron's mind via cortical psychic patch and retrieving the cure that saved Optimus. In the next episode, "Out of His Head", Optimus is, surprisingly, saved by the revived Megatron when he intercepted Starscream's attempted nosedive to kill him.

During the three-part "One Shall Rise", Optimus uses the Matrix of Leadership to defeat Unicron. Unfortunately, in doing so, he not only emptied the wisdom of the Primes, but lost his own memories as a Prime, believing himself to be Orion Pax once again. Megatron took advantage of this to manipulate Orion into deciphering Iacon records the Decepticons have stolen from Cybertron. Eventually, Orion figures out the truth and escapes. Jack is later able to restore Optimus' memories after downloading the wisdom of the Primes from Vector Sigma into its key which Optimus gave him before he left to stop Unicron. However, Optimus could not recall the time he spent as a Decepticon.

Shortly after the events of "Orion Pax" during "Operation Bumblebee: Part 1" and "Operation Bumblebee: Part 2" Optimus leads Ratchet and Bumblebee to the location of an Iacon relic that Megatron has unearthed, revealed to be none other than the Spark Extractor, a Decepticon weapon that can consume all Cybertronian life forces within its radius. In the ensuing battle, Optimus and Ratchet draw the fire of the Decepticon troopers, allowing Bumblebee to claim the Spark Extractor for the Autobots from Megatron himself. Later, after finding that M.E.C.H. has stolen Bumblebee's T-cog, Optimus vows to help him reclaim it, and confines him to base to keep him from danger. However, when Bumblebee disobeys Optimus's orders, nearly costing the young scout his life, Optimus takes into agreement with Ratchet's idea of a T-cog transplant, also questioning Ratchet if he wishes to give Bumblebee his T-cog as a way of making up for the Autobot medic's inability to repair Bumblebee's voice box during the war. The surgery is postponed when the Decepticons unearth the Forge of Solus Prime, which Optimus, Bulkhead and Arcee hope to claim in order to construct Bumblebee a new T-cog. In a largely one sided battle, Optimus and Arcee are nearly defeated by Knock Out, saved only when Bulkhead uses the Forge to destroy Knock Out's shield generator and defeat both him and Breakdown. Megatron emerges victorious from this battle by shooting Bulkhead and forcing Optimus to choose his comrade over the relic. Optimus does not worry about the loss of the forge, knowing only a Prime like himself could wield it. He is then informed by Ratchet of Bumblebee storming M.E.C.H.'s base, and goes after him with the other Autobots, finding him cradling his badly damaged T-cog. After another surgery to repair the T-cog and place it back within Bumblebee's chassis, Optimus looks on in pride as Bumblebee successfully transforms as well as seeing Ratchet's newfound confidence in himself after the surgery was completed.

In "Loose Cannons" Optimus aids Wheeljack in fighting off Dreadwing when both the latter and former crash to earth near Omaha. During the fight, Wheeljack inadvertently destroys a gas station, forcing Dreadwing to retreat, and also irritating Optimus and Agent Fowler with his disregard for civilians, authority and the need to remain covert as well as his opinion that Optimus is cowardly. Optimus became further sided against Wheeljack's decisions after his desire for vengeance against Dreadwing ends with the Decepticon capturing Bulkhead. Optimus and Wheeljack team up to rescue him, and while the Wrecker attempts to disarm Dreadwing's bomb (which is attached to Bulkhead,) Optimus outwits and captures Dreadwing, forcing him to disarm the weapon. As Dreadwing escapes, Wheeljack apologizes to Optimus, admitting he was wrong about him.

During the events of "Crossfire" Optimus leads Team Prime to stop Airachnid when she gains control of an Insecticon, after gaining information via a badly wounded and T-cogless Starscream (who previously had his biomechanical organ taken by Silas and M.E.C.H), who was injured by Airachnid's said Insecticon. Proceeding with his team, he leads them into the abandoned Energon mine she is taking refuge in, where Megatron battles her Insecticon assassin, and also comes to the realization that Starscream had tricked Team Prime into eliminating all his enemies for him. After trying to unsuccessfully stop Arcee from going after Airachnid, Optimus watches as Megatron beheads the Insecticon, and then descended to face Megatron, who asked if Optimus would end him, or take him hostage. Before Optimus or anyone else could respond, Dreadwing and an armada of Decepticon troopers attacked, holding Optimus and his team at gunpoint. When Dreadwing gives his word that they will not be harmed, Megatron gives the troopers the order to annihilate them, as Megatron did not give his word. Team Prime barely escapes, and rescues Arcee from Airachnid's webbing in the aftermath.

Shortly after, in the events of "Nemesis Prime", an eerie look-alike to Optimus nearly runs Agent Fowler off the road, and is thwarted by Bulkhead, Bumblebee, and Arcee, the latter of which is knocked out by the impostor. When the real Optimus returns to base from an underground Energon deposit, he is questioned by the members of his team. Fowler's explanation of the incident reveals a ghoulish truth: M.E.C.H has created a working replica of Optimus, powered by energon and Starscream's stolen T-cog, controlled personally by Silas. Silas attacks the Alden Military Base using the replica, and successfully frames Optimus. Optimus and Ratchet then deduce that Nemesis Prime (as the replica is named by Miko) relies on its vehicle mode for transportation, as M.E.C.H. has no Cybertronian technology, and use that knowledge to pinpoint M.E.C.H and Silas' location. Upon finding the base, Team Prime is engaged by Silas using Nemesis Prime, and Optimus fights Nemesis Prime in a lengthy battle. However, Nemesis Prime has a major advantage over Optimus; he has extensive combat skills and all of Optimus' skills, strength and firepower added to the fact his robot cannot feel pain, and this allows him to best Optimus by stabbing him in the lower torso, something even Megatron had a hard time attempting to accomplish. Agent Fowler however, is able to save Optimus by distracting Silas, which allows the Autobot leader to send the replica through the silo roof they are standing on, crushing Silas beneath it. Optimus leaves with his team as the military arrives, and back at base wonders what will become of M.E.C.H. with Silas mortally wounded.

In the events of "Grill" Agent Fowler talks in an interview about how the Nemesis Prime robot is not the real Optimus Prime, attempting to convince his superior, the stern and disbelieving General Bryce, that Optimus is alive and on the side of the United States. Bryce is visited at the end of his interview with Fowler by Optimus himself who even asks how Bryce is doing, genuinely surprising the general. General Bryce agrees with Fowler and ends the interview.

In "Armada", Optimus leads Bumblebee and Arcee to take down Airachnid when she unleashes an entire swarm of Insecticons upon Megatron's warship. Optimus fights and kills several Insecticons with Bumblebee as Arcee chases after Airachnid. Once they catch up to Arcee, Optimus complements Arcee on the fact that she did not kill the Decepticon to avenge her previous partner, Tailgate. They take Airachnid back in a stasis pod Arcee trapped her in.

In "Flying Mind", Optimus leads Bulkhead, Arcee, and Bumblebee to attack the Nemesis with the Spark Extractor after Bulkhead brought it crashing to the ground in "Armada". When Trypticon, the dormant consciousness that is the Nemesis itself, is brought back online by Megatron using dark energon, Optimus and the rest of Team Prime are rendered into stasis by its cannons until Jack, Miko, Raphael, Agent Fowler, and Ratchet shut Trypticon back into standby mode. Upon awakening, he learns that the Nemesis has decrypted four sets of coordinates leading to four different Iacon relics. From there, Team Prime splits up, chasing after the relics.

in "Triangulation", Optimus follows one set of coordinates to Antarctica, where he encounters Dreadwing and Starscream, the former having captured the latter. Dreadwing and Optimus fight a heated and evenly matched duel with blasters and swords until Optimus ends the battle by causing an avalanche of snow to bury Dreadwing. When Dreadwing's troops arrive with Starscream, the rogue Decepticon saves Optimus, and gloats at their "teamwork". Optimus then leads the still-handcuffed and complaining Starscream to a human base where the relic is housed, moving in to claim it once Agent Fowler has cleared the base. Dreadwing attacks again as the two reach the base, and Starscream claims the relic while Optimus and Dreadwing continue their battle. Starscream then attacks him and Dreadwing with the relic, (identified as the Apex Armor by Optimus), and this forces Optimus to team up with Dreadwing. The duo are unable to best Starscream physically, but outwit him, using Dreadwing's bombs, sending Starscream plummeting into the ocean deep below the ice. Optimus then calls a truce with Dreadwing, and offers him the chance to join the Autobots to end the conflict, but Dreadwing rebuffs and says he will kill Optimus the next time they meet, though he admits that the Autobot commander saved his life.

In "Hurt", Optimus is among the members of Team Prime monitoring Bulkhead's condition after the latter was poisoned by tox-en (a deadly form of energon) and shot in the back by Hardshell. When Wheeljack showed up and demanded to know who wounded Bulkhead, Optimus replied that it was better to help Bulkhead recover than seek revenge. Optimus was present when Wheeljack returned, badly wounded from his fight with Hardshell, Optimus was greatly disappointed in him for his quest for vengeance, as well as taking Miko along and putting her in harm's way.

In "New Recruit", Raphael alerts Optimus to the discovery of a Cybertronian escape pod which he had found images of in an online news report. Optimus then takes Team Prime, minus the still-recovering Bulkhead, and investigates. Upon arrival at the crash site, Optimus and his team are attacked by a squad consisting of both Insecticons and Vehicons, only to be aided by the pod's occupant. Upon winning the battle, Optimus commends the young Autobot, a rookie warrior named Smokescreen. Optimus also learns of Smokescreen's training in the Elite Guard and that he was a bodyguard to Optimus' mentor, Alpha Trion, Cybertron's master archivist. Optimus invites Smokescreen back to base for further training, also achieving the chagrin of Bulkhead who fears he will be replaced. Optimus tries to alleviate Bulkhead's fears, but is interrupted when Raphael finds an article on a discovery of red energon, an energon variant that gives the user hyper-speed. Upon arriving at the coordinates where the red energon is being stored, Optimus, Arcee and Bumblebee are attacked by Starscream, who still has possession of the Apex Armor. Starscream fights and nearly defeats Optimus and his team, but Smokescreen arrives and defeats Starscream by removing him from the armor with the Phase-Shifter. Starscream however still manages to escape with the red energon. When they return to base, Optimus congratulates Smokescreen on his innovativeness and welcomes him officially to Team Prime.

In "Legacy" and "Alpha; Omega", Optimus asks Jack to teach Smokescreen how to blend in among the populace of earth when he accidentally reveals himself, also reminding them that they must also take responsibility for this accident. When another Iacon relic is unearthed, Optimus takes most of Team Prime to investigate. For many hours, they trail the relic's signal, only to realize it is a decoy being deployed by the Decepticons. Optimus is then informed by an alarmed Ratchet that Smokescreen went after the real relic, the Star Saber, and has been captured by Megatron himself. Optimus then leads Team Prime to rescue him and Jack, whom had been brought along by Smokescreen. Optimus then chases after the Star Saber, which is embedded in a mountain that Megatron has removed using the Nemesis in order to claim it. Optimus successfully removes the Star Saber, and slices the mountain in half when it is dropped on him. Optimus then attacks the Nemesis directly, and damages it with a wave of energy emitted by the sword. Upon returning to base, Optimus sternly informs Smokescreen that disregard for human safety, or the safety of any team members will not be tolerated, and reminds all on his team that they are titans on earth and must take care and mind their power. Optimus then receives a message through the Star Saber from Alpha Trion himself. Apha Trion informs Optimus that the last four relics of Iacon are the Omega Keys, devices able to revive Cybertron. Optimus then sends Arcee and Smokescreen to retrieve the first key. When Arcee returns revealing Smokescreen has been "killed", Optimus goes to Egypt, where the first key is hidden. When he arrives, Optimus is horrified and disgusted at Megatron, who has replaced his arm with that of an unknown Prime, and fashioned a Dark Star Saber from a chunk of dark energon using his newfound control over the Forge of Solus Prime. The two combatants battle fiercely, and Megatron eventually gains the upper hand, shattering the Star Saber's blade with his own dark sword. Optimus is then saved from certain death by Smokescreen using the phase-shifter. The pair then retreats back to base with the first Omega Key. Smokescreen is awarded the phase-shifter as his signature weapon by the team, but laments over the loss of the Star Saber. Ratchet then reminds Team Prime that while Optimus may have only wielded the power of the ancient Primes for one day, he does not require the Star Saber to be the mightiest of warriors.

In "Regeneration" and "Darkest Hour" Optimus Prime and the Autobots gain the Forge of Solus Prime following their parley with Dreadwing. Optimus Prime uses the Forge of Solus Prime to reforge the Star Saber and forge a Space Bridge. Following the fight with the Decepticons on Cybertron, Optimus Prime and the Autobots find the Omega Lock in the Sea of Rust. When it came to the Omega Lock being unearthed by the Autobots, Megatron offers a trade with the Autobots for the Omega Keys when it is shown that Starscream, Soundwave, and Knock Out had captured Jack, Miko, and Raf and brought them to Cybertron in special pods.

In "Darkest Hour," Optimus Prime and the Autobots surrender the relics they wield and the Omega Keys to Megatron in order to save the captive humans. When Megatron has the Space Bridge locked onto Earth as part of his invasion on Earth and plans to use the Omega Lock to convert Earth into a robot version of itself, Optimus Prime reclaims the Star Saber and slices the Prime arm off of Megatron as he aborts the configuration of Earth and then escapes back to Earth with the humans and Autobots. It is soon discovered that Megatron has Cyberformed part of the desert in Jasper, Nevada as Optimus Prime guesses that the Decepticons have discovered where their base is. The Autobots and Agent Fowler fight against the Vehicons and the Insecticons as the Nemesis hovers over the Autobot Base. Optimus Prime sacrifices himself so that the other Autobots can get out of the Autobot Base through the Space Bridge. When the Decepticons arrive at the ruins of the Autobot base, Optimus Prime's arm can be seen sticking out of the rubble.

In "Darkmount, NV", Optimus is revealed to have survived the explosion, but only just. Smokescreen is revealed to have pulled him from the wreckage and saved him from being killed by the searching Decepticons with the Phase-Shifter. Smokescreen then drags his wounded commander to an underground cavern where they will not be detected by enemy troops.

In "Scattered," Optimus asks what has become of the Forge of Solus Prime, and finds it has been stolen by the Decepticons. Smokescreen then sets out to steal it back, believing Optimus can use it to repair himself. In "Prey," Optimus senses that he is dying and says there is no hope. He then goes on to tell the returned Smokescreen that he must not use the Forge of Solus Prime to repair himself and that its power is limited and must be used to repair the Omega Lock. When Smokescreen then explains that only a Prime can use it, Optimus replies that the fate of Cybertron is more important than his own survival. He then goes on to say that there will be a new Prime, which he believes will be Smokescreen.

Optimus Prime's power-up in "Rebellion"

In "Rebellion," Smokescreen tells Optimus Prime that he is not ready to be a Prime. Optimus Prime tells Smokescreen that the Matrix of Leadership will present itself to one that is worthy. Optimus Prime then gets contacted by Alpha Trion where Optimus Prime hesitates into becoming one with the Allspark. Optimus Prime is asked by Alpha Trion to take his hand. When Optimus Prime shuts down, Smokescreen puts the Forge of Solus Prime in Optimus Prime's hand. When Ultra Magnus was about to be executed by Megatron, Optimus Prime arrives in a new body and jet pack where he saves Ultra Magnus. Optimus Prime then fights Megatron in an airborne battle and throws Megatron into the core of the Fusion Cannon. After Megatron's citadel was destroyed, Optimus Prime welcomes Ultra Magnus to Earth.

Games

Optimus Prime is one of the playable Autobot characters in the 2010 video game Transformers: War for Cybertron. In the Autobot campaign, he starts off as Optimus, a warrior who rallies his fellow autobots against the Decepticons following the reported death of their leader Zeta Prime. He succeeds in defending the Autobots' home city of Iacon from Starscream and his forces. Optimus then receives a distress call from Zeta Prime. Knowing that this is most likely a trap set by Megatron, he proceeds anyway with a rescue mission. He lets himself, Bumblebee, and Sideswipe be captured by the Decepticons and is sent to a prison in Kaon, the decepticon capital, in an elaborate scheme to free Zeta Prime and all imprisoned Autobots. He frees all the other prisoners, and defeats Soundwave and his minions Frenzy, Rumble, and Laserbeak, but he is too late to save Zeta Prime. After taking Zeta Prime's body back to the Autobot high council, he is bestowed upon the well earned title of Prime.

Optimus Prime is then informed that Megatron has infected the core of Cybertron with dark energon and is given the task to undo the damage done. After rescuing Omega Supreme, Optimus, Ironhide, and Prowl fight their way to the core, but it's too late. The core informs Optimus that it is far too corrupted. It can repair itself by shuting down, but it will take millions of years. By that time, Cybertron will have to become cold, barren, and uninhabitable. The core gives Optimus a small piece of itself, saying it will still survive as long as the piece does. Optimus accepts the burden and the core relinquishes the Autobot Matrix of Leadership.

Realizing that the planet is dying, Optimus orders a mass evacuation of all Autobot cities, but many transport ships are destroyed by the Decepticon satellite Trypticon, under orders from Megatron that no one shall leave the planet. He orders the Aerialbots Jetfire, Silverbolt and Air Raid to fly and destroy Trypticon. The aerial trio manages to destroy Trypticon's jet pack and send the Decepticon behemoth crashing into Cybertron, where Optimus Prime and the Autobots band together to narrowly defeat him, sending him plunging into a pool of raw energon. Optimus and the remaining Autobots volunteer to stay and defend Cybertron from Megatron for as long as possible while the rest evacuate the planet. He commissions a massive vessel known as "the Ark" to transport the remaining Autobots into space when the time comes.

In the Nintendo DS game War for Cybertron: Autobots, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee are the initial two characters playable in the game.

Optimus Prime appears in the game, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.
